Jim Corbett National Park is a forest range situated in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand, India. It is the largest national park of Uttarakhand; its earlier name was Hailey National Park. Jim Corbett has 215 tigers so the chances of tiger sightings are high. This place is a great combination of Grasslands and a lot of water bodies & rivers. Ramganga river a lifeline of the park is a main attraction of Jim Corbett. Ramganga river flows from Uttarakhand state and merges with the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh before reaching Kanpur. , and it’s a quite decent place for animals and helps in keeping them cool during the summers. You can spot various wild species here including The Royal Bengal Tiger & Indian elephant. Park covers an area of 520.8 km2 (201.1 sq mi) is the main area and the rest is a buffer zone you can see the views of Pauri Garhwal, Almora, and Nainital from the park. History

Jim Corbett national park is located in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand. It was the oldest National park in India established in 1936 by British rulers and they named it Hailey National Park. But after India’s independence, its name was changed to Corbett National park, on the name of a British hunter Jim Corbett who hunted many men eater tigers and leopards and named the forest in his name after one year of his demise. He played a main role in the establishment of the park.

Jim Corbett was converted into Jim Corbett tiger reserve on 1 April 1973. At that time Project tiger was begun from Corbett Dhikala range (the Park has 5 zones and one of them is known as Dhikala zone) in 1973 tiger population was 2658 and now this number has increased from 268 to 1468.

Bijrani Zone

Bijrani zone is one out of 6 zones in Jim Corbett national park. It is located near Ramnagar town. Bijrani is the best zone for tiger sightings after Dhikala zone covered with large grasslands also known as dense Sal forest. You can see a glimpse of the royal Bengal tiger, leopard, wild elephant, black bears, chital, sambar, and hog deer. There are more than 600 bird species in the Bijrani Zone.

Bijrani Zone offers you a Jungle safari. Safari tours are organized in each zone by the zone administration of the forest. It starts with Aamdanda’s gate which is an entry gate of the Bijrani zone. It is 1 km away from Ramnagar city. After roaming for 5km in the buffer zone you will enter into a core zone of the forest. 

Night stay in Bijrani is not possible; you have to return to your camp/hotel before sunset. There are two shifts for Jeep safari morning and evening rides. You can choose any one of them according to your suitability. 


Safari Timings 

Only 30 safari jeeps are allowed in one shift and the timings for safari.

Dhela Zone

Dhela zone is crafted from the southern buffer zone of the park and entered into the map in 2014. Covered with grasslands (chaurs) and that’s the main attraction of the Dhela zone. A place for various wildlife species, especially the sambar deer. It is an easy hunting place for The Royal Bengal Tiger so the chances of spotting Tigers in the Dhela zone are high. Because Sal forest is a favorite place for tigers to hunt. You can do a Jungle safari here during the morning & evening shifts. If you are planning then book in advance 15 days before going.



Dhikala Zone

Dhikala is the core zone of Jim Corbett National Park. It is a great place for wildlife lovers. It is the best zone out of 5 zones in the park. At Dhikala you can dive into nature & feel the animal habitat from its nearest. It comes in a most core zones in Jim Corbett National park. The elephant safari is one of the best ways to explore Flora & fauna in the Grasslands (Chaurs), Elephant ride is only available in Dhikala and Bijrani zone. There are only a few elephants for the safari, so you have to book online in advance (It might be closed when you go so check before you go). 


Night Stay in Dhikala

Canter safari and Jeep safari are also available but you can only book a Safari tour in Dhikala if you are staying in any of the forest rest houses (FRH) in Dhikala. Resorts in the Dhikala zone are limited so booking starts 6 months before its opening (Dhikala zone opens from 15th Nov – 15th June) & people are waiting in the queue for booking the slot. It’s a core wild area so you have to wear ordinary clothes and avoid wearing eye-catching colors and also avoid perfumes for your & animal’s safety.

Things To Do in Jim Corbett National Park


Durgadevi Zone

Durgadevi zone is located at the northern corner of the park. Its beautiful landscape and hilly terrain with dense green forest are marvelous. The Ramganga River and the Mandal River merge at many points in this zone. It is home to exotic birds, if you are interested in bird sightings then don’t miss this place during your trip to Jim Corbett. Apart from that you can also spot various species of wild animals.

If you are lucky you may spot a Royal Bengal Tiger and other animals like Wild Boar, and Wild Asian Elephant, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Chital, Black Faced Monkey Rhesus Monkey, Barking Deer, and Jackal. There are some chances of seeing some endangered species. 
Durgadevi zone offers Jungle safari only for day visitors, Jungle Safari is open from 15th October to 15th June.


Jhirna Zone

Jhirna zone is one of the most popular zones & located at the southern edge of the Corbett reserve park. It was created to increase the area of the park, Jhirna is a village located at the borders of the park. Some farming fields of Jibhri village have been converted into the Jungle during project Tiger. You can spot Royal Bengal Tiger, Elephant, etc. It’s a favorite place for deers, chitals, nilgai, and elephants. Jhirna zone has water bodies which make the place more scenic. You can stay in a Forest rest house.
